Why this recipe works

Have you ever wondered if you could bake a vegan biscuits recipe in the air fryer? Chances are, if you have one of these amazing contraptions, the thought has crossed your mind– well, that’s exactly what happened to me anyway.

You see, in the south biscuits are appreciated year ’round, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Nothing beats homemade biscuits, but with the seasons comes times of extreme southern heat. Turning the oven on can make the house feel more like a sauna from hell, making one question the quest for biscuits in July.

That’s one reason why I LOVE the air fryer so much!! I can bake biscuits without the sweat, and enjoy all the amazing feelings you get when biting into a fresh, fluffy, buttery biscuit.

Btw, check out these instructions on using parchment paper in the air fryer. Don’t have an air fryer? Check out the directions for traditional oven baking.

Why vegan biscuits are important to southerners

It’s hard to explain how important biscuits are to the true southerner. It’s not just about pleasure or tangible gain in food form. It’s about story.

Because baking biscuits is like hearing your favorite bedtime story read aloud or listening to your mom talk in a low, slow voice for a very long time at the kitchen table. You enjoy experiencing it again and again, being wrapped up in it, and feeling it in your soul.

True, not all biscuits are created equal, and you know when the story isn’t right. But when you nail it, with all the right notes in just the right place, you can be taken on a southern adventure inside your heart. And that’s what I feel when I eat homemade biscuits– a choir of sweet southern stories that make me come back for more.

I hope that you enjoy this vegan biscuits recipe, and that they hit that special spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you put biscuits in the air fryer?

One of the best reasons to use an air fryer over an oven (other than not having to heat up the whole house) is that your biscuits can be cooked in about 6 minutes! Check your biscuits at about 4 minutes– it really depends on how crispy you want the tops. I like my biscuits to be golden brown on top.

Can you use parchment paper in the air fryer?

Believe it or not, you CAN use parchment paper in the air fryer! Check this post to see step by step instructions on preparing your parchment paper before using.

Do you have to use vegan butter for this recipe?

I find that vegan butter works the best (such as the Earth Balance brand) because you really can’t tell the difference between vegan biscuits and traditional biscuits. However, you can substitute with coconut oil if you really must. Just keep in mind that this may change how well they roll out.

Recipe ingredients

  • Unbleached, all-purpose white flour. I like using Bob’s Red Mill or King Arthur’s Flour brands.
  • Sugar. You can use any granulated sugar you want. I prefer using organic cane sugar since it is not processed using bone char.
  • Baking powder.
  • Salt. I use Himalayan pink salt.
  • Dairy-free butter. My favorite brand is Earth Balance, but any dairy-free butter will do.
  • Full-fat coconut milk (or another plant-based milk of your choice).

Air Fryer instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add softened vegan butter. Using a fork (or pastry dough blender), cut the butter into the flour, until the mixture resembles small crumbs.
  2. Add in coconut milk and mix again, until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. The dough will be sticky.
  3. Turn dough out on a floured surface and kneed 8-10 times (this helps create a flaky biscuit!). Roll dough out to be about 1-inch thick. Using a small jar (mine was 2 ½ inches diameter) or biscuit cutter, cut biscuits out of the dough. Kneed remaining dough together and repeat this process until all dough is used up.
  4. Prepare parchment paper for the air fryer and set aside. Set air fryer to 400° F (204° C) on the BAKE setting for 6 minutes.
  5. Once the air fryer reads ADD FOOD, remove the basket and carefully line with prepared parchment paper. Transfer biscuits (in batches of about 9) and return basket to air fryer. Check to see how the biscuits are browning after about 4 minutes. Bake until golden brown on the top and remove from basket. Repeat process until all remaining biscuits are cooked.

Allergy Information and Substitutions

  • These biscuits are 100% vegan, meaning they are dairy-free and egg-free. They are also naturally nut-free.
  • Make them gluten-free by using a gluten-free all purpose flour of your choice, such as Bob’s Red Mill brand (the blue bag). Just keep in mind that rolling may be more of a challenge– you can also try doing drop biscuits instead of rolling.
  • Don’t want to use coconut milk? Swap it out for another plant-based milk of your choice, or water.
  • Don’t want to use vegan butter? These biscuits can be made with coconut oil, but I would suggest using another plant milk (or water) instead of full-fat coconut milk. Also keep in mind that they may not roll the same.

These look wonderful and I’ll be trying them? Can you tell me, in inches, how big the biscuits are? I see they’re 1″ thick but how big is the diameter? Thanks for sharing 🙂

Hi Jackie, good question! I used a jar that has a diameter of 2 1/2 inches. That being said, you can make them bigger if you want– just keep in mind that you may have to run more batches depending on how large your biscuits are. Hope that helps!
