All South Africa's Streaming Services... What They Offer And Cost! (2024)

From series, movies, documentaries, news and sports… YES, sports!!! Here are all the streaming service options in South Africa!

Johannesburg, South Africa (24 February 2022) – With the news that DStv will limit device streaming from March 2022, South Africans are asking what alternatives do we have to content, streaming and specifically sports?

DStv announced that from 22 March 2022, customers will be limited to streaming DStv on one device at a time. They will still be able to watch previously downloaded content on a second device.

“The change will be made to all DStv subscriptions across Africa; however, only customers making use of more than one concurrent stream will be directly affected by the change.

“We will not limit the number of people using a login – however, we are limiting (to one) the number of people who can stream at the same time.”

South Africans immediatly took to social media to voice their disgust at the move and started asking about alternative streaming services available in the country… specifically with regards to sports.

M-Net (DStv) has had a monopoly in South Africa content since 1986, but with globalisation and a shift in the way we consume media, they seem to be losing the streaming battle. Compared to other services, their cost is way higher than the competition (DStv currently costs between R29 and R829 per month), and the amount of content being produced by other services is incomparable.

So what else is on offer in South Africa?Well, here’s our list of what we currently have available, as well as two massive streaming services coming in 2022 and 2023… and we have some alternative sports streaming services available too.

Side Note: We know that some people use a VPN to get International streaming services, and while the act of using a VPN is not inherently illegal, many activities using a VPN might be illegal – like streaming and the misuse of copyright laws.

So here is what is legally available in South Africa:

But what about sport?

Currently, DStv seems to own the market share when looking for sport, but we dug a bit deeper and actually found a few alternatives.

Apps

Many sports disciplines are offering stand-alone apps or channels for fans to watch and follow, not only giving viewers what they are looking for but actually enhancing the entire experience! The likes of Dakar, Global Cycling Network,Formula1 TV, RedbullTV andWWE have got the formula right… and we’re sure more channels will pop up in the future.

Apps cost between R0 to R300 per month (depending on what you watch).

Apple TV

The Sport screen in the Apple TV App gives you immediate access to a wide array of live and scheduled sports events. The costs differ for each sport or event, and some of the channels are not yet available in South Africa, but some are. It’s a hit and miss at the moment, but maybe you’ll find one channel that costs next to nothing and gives you exactly what you are looking for (like the Formula 1 channel).

Apple TV Sports costs between R60 to R300 per month (depending on what you watch).

CBS Sports on Paramount+ (coming 2023)

Catch edge-of-your-seat action with CBS Sports like the NFL, UEFA & more, along with highlights, replays and expert analysis from the best in the game. Aside from an impressive on-demand library that draws from ViacomCBS’s substantial back catalogue, Paramount+ also includes coverage for both live sports and on-demand shows geared toward sports fans.

Paramount+ will cost anywhere between R100 to R150 per month.

Now TV Sky Sports

Now TV Sky Sports offers a comparable range of sports channels and coverage. It does, however, require a UK debit or credit card and address to use but is legal to stream in South Africa. From Football, Rugby, Cricket, Golf and Formula 1, this could be the streaming sports channel for you!

Now TV Sky Sports Pro costs R673 per month.

Showmax PRO

Showmax “PRO” offer sport directly from SuperSport. Live football, athletics, boxing and more, plus 24-hour news. Showmax doesn’t have dedicated SuperSport channels like you’re used to seeing on television. Instead, Showmax streams individual events live. Rather than tuning into a SuperSport channel, search for the specific game or event you want to stream.

Showmax Pro costs R449 per month.

And what about news?

Many local and international news networks like eNCA, Fox and Sky have live YouTube channels where you can pick up the news as long as you have data – it is a replication of what you would find on TV networks.
