FAQ (2024)

  1. What are the compatible mobile and tablet devices?
WatchESPN is available for use on the following mobile devices: Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, iPad Mini (must have iOS 7.0 or later) and Android Mobile and tablet devices, including the Kindle Fire (running version 4.0 and above).
  2. Is there a cost to download the "WatchESPN" app?
WatchESPN is free. However, you must be a subscriber of AT&T U-Verse, BendBroadband, Bright House Networks, Charter, Comcast XFINITY, Cox, Midcontinent Communications, Optimum, Time Warner Cable or Verizon FIOS with the appropriate ESPN video/TV channel packages. If you are not a subscriber of one of these providers, you will be directed to an ESPN schedule.
  3. Will this application only work if I am an ESPN TV subscriber of AT&T U-Verse, BendBroadband, Bright House Networks, Charter, Comcast XFINITY, Cox, Midcontinent Communications, Optimum, Time Warner Cable or Verizon FIOS?
    At this time, yes.
  4. I subscribe to Verizon Broadband (but not Verizon FiOS), can I get access to the "WatchESPN" application?
You will be able to view ESPN3 content only on the WatchESPN application.
  5. Is there a wireless data charge to view the "WatchESPN" application on my mobile device or tablet?
Many wireless providers have specific data plans to support video consumption, please check with your provider to confirm you have an appropriate plan.
  6. How do I authenticate and login to the WatchESPN app on my mobile device?
The first time you open the app, you will be prompted to select your video provider and log in with the username and password your video provider has issued to you. If you do not complete this process the first time you use the app, you can start this process at any time by trying to play WatchESPN content.
  7. What happens if I switch wireless providers?
The process is exactly the same as viewing the application on an initial device for the first time.
  8. Is all ESPN Authenticated Networks and ESPN3 programming available on my mobile device as well?
The video you see on your mobile and tablet device, depends upon your ESPN video/TV channel package subscription.
  9. What is a Blackout? How is my location determined if the event is blacked out?
Blackouts apply to telecasts that have been sold regionally or locally per league, conference and local rightsholder agreements. Regional and local rights holders are usually broadcast stations or regional sports networks. Blackouts are implemented to protect the primary rights holder, as defined by the professional and college sports leagues or teams in a given market. If you are receiving blackout messaging on WatchESPN, check your local listings to find the television network carrying the event. If you see a message that states, "This content is subject to blackout", this is because the event that you requested is not available on WatchESPN in your location. Your location is determined by your IP Address. If you are connecting with a mobile device and believe you are incorrectly receiving blackout messaging, try connecting via WiFi. If you continue to receive inaccurate blackout messaging, please contact our Customer Care Team at 888-549-ESPN or @ESPN_FanCentral on Twitter.
  10. Why am I unable to watch Monday Night Football from my mobile device?
Due to rights differences, Monday Night Football (and preseason NFL games) are only available on WatchESPN on a desktop, WatchESPN on Xbox with a Xbox Live GOLD membership, WatchESPN on Apple TV and Roku, or on the WatchESPN application on iPads and Android tablets. Other mobile devices will not have access to Monday Night Football programming via the WatchESPN App.
  11. Will this application only work if I am on a WIFI network or will I be able to connect using 3G?
The WatchESPN application will also work on WIFI, 3G and 4G service as long as you have an authenticated video subscription from an affiliated video provider.
  12. Can I access WatchESPN internationally?
At this time, WatchESPN is only available on U.S. domestic internet and wireless services.
  13. Does WatchESPN offer Closed Captioning?
Closed captioning is available on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews and ESPN Deportes. Select ESPN3 content also has closed captioning available. To enable closed captioning on devices running iOS 8 or newer, select the "Settings" icon on your home screen, then select "General," then select "Accessibility," then select "Subtitles & Captioning" under the "Media" heading.
