A while back I put some new foam pads on the soft top latches to keep them from rattling when I didn't have the boot cover on. I cut these from some adhesive foam I had on hand. After that I found that you can actually buy new pads from Mazda, so I did that. Here is the number:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1786/41142529610_ce9b33eaed_c.jpg

This morning I got around to installing these. The foam I made mine out of was about 2mm in thickness. As you can see the factory ones are much thicker:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1766/42953207591_f36dd97dff_c.jpg

I removed the old ones from here (in case you are not sure of what I am talking about) and then after a good cleaning installed the new ones:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1767/41142528660_2e04985506_c.jpg

Latches are nice and tight now. Once that was done I also replaced the forward splash guard on the passenger side front fender. It's this piece:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1798/42953205801_a510cc2354_c.jpg

I managed to break the old one at the bottom where the large opening is when I was putting everything back together after the head replacement. It wasn't really hurting anything but the new one was only $32 so I figured why not?

I went out to check if I could speed up the typical slow windows. Especially since last night with the engine off, the driver's side went up eerily slow.
So sprayed some silicone lubing on the rollers and immediately it raced up and down without a hitch.
Well, one hitch… It meant doing the passenger side as well since that went way slower in comparison now.
Few hours later the dealer called, my remote fob came in. Just like on the phone they smilingly told me if programming myself failed, I could come back in.
I tried on the parking lot, 4 times, no succes. Tried the next tutorial, one try and it worked!

So the weekend before last my wife and I took her to Maryville and then hit he mountains. Followed the Dragon and Moonshiner 28 over to Bryson City (With a stop at Fontana on the way). Slow trip over on the weekend - lots of traffic but the wife wanted to go. Came all the way back on 129 no traffic - let some superbikes past me - until about 3/4th way back got behind a Tiguan. Massachusetts tags - plenty of opportunities for the driver to let me by - go figure - great ride anyway. Then down 411 to Sweetwater, down 75 to Hwy 30, across the river through Dayton to Pikeville - down the beautiful Sequatchie Valley and home. First time since February she has got to get her legs stretched topless all the way. Hope to get another trip in before we go OUTCONUS. Soon new exhaust (probably Roadster 4), lite weight flywheel, new clutch and new driveshaft (or joint replace and balance)

It says Visteon moden no. 41703

Is yours an NB or FL? Maybe there's a difference?
I ordered it just by VIN.

Last year my wife and I got caught in a torrential downpour with the top down on an interstate. With the sped above 60, very little got in the car or even on the boot. When I used the windshield wipers, the water would creep up the a-pillar, rise to the top of the door glass and drip on my arm. That was about it. We drove through the storm and continued home with the top down and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

And the best part is the bypassing cars with the saucer eyes of their occupants.

I got an injectors cleaner bottle since émissions was borderline on last check, and a brakes brakes cleaning spray so as to clean up underneath then look for a leak.

I also have filled a couple of dings with touch-up paint and now I plan to fine-sand it then polish then -for the first time- wax the whole car. I am officially falling onto the dark side.

Honest, I don’t know if I can gather the courage to wax it on our residence’s parking lot.

2 questions. Is that a chipped key? If not does the new programed key fob allow a non chipped key to keep car running?
I have a key fob, but now i need to replace my door jamb sensor, which is preventing me from programming the fob.

The old ones are very easy to get out if you drill a couple of holes in the trim rings and just rotate them out, and there's no risk of breaking the plastic locking tabs in the dash.

I discovered (actually read in an old thread) that there’s an even easier way with no risk of damage. There’s a slot near the front of the barrel (might be partly covered in felt) that you can get a screwdriver blade to engage with if you rotate the vent out the way. You can then use the screwdriver to rotate the barrel and the whole thing just pops out. I’ll post a photo if this isn’t clear.

Got to drive mine after it being stored for a couple of weeks in a friends garage while I'm moving from Oregon to Arizona. Stopped at a Whataburger for lunch and this young guy walks by (by himself) where I'm sitting and says "Who puts a roll cage in a Miata?" (I'm not wearing any Miata related clothing for once)

I continue eating, and he walks back by to sit down and says out loud again "Who puts a roll cage in a Miata, and I wonder how much that cost?" As I finish eating I say very calmly "It was a thousand dollars, and it's a Miata specific rollbar." He asks how I know and I tell him it's my Miata. He got a little big eyed and shocked, and I just explained that I drive mine at Laguna Seca track days and it's required for doing so. After that he became very inquisitive about what I had done to the car, and was very complimentary about the look and the work that has been done on the car. He also apologized if he sounded rude about his comments and thanked me for the info about mine.

Working on removing the PPF and the one sleeve/bushing refuses to shift. So I thought I would try some heat. Got my propane torch set up and the igniter wasn't working right so I carry it into the house and light it on the stove, carry it outside where a gust of wind almost puts it out, shield it with my hand, crawl under the car, go to turn the flame up and turned it the wrong way and it goes out. Crawl back out from under the car, go back in the house, re-light the torch, shield it from wind, crawl back under car, start heating the bush, hold the torch at the wrong angle and it flames out. Quit for the night.

Foamectomy.

My 6 foot tall ass prevented me from seeing the gauges completely (I like to sit straighter than most) and my hair was up against the soft top anytime it was up (not that it's often but still) and performance wise I'd wanted to sit lower for a while now.

I had previously looked at a number of different YouTube how-to's.

So this morning I pulled the seat out. I disassembled the seat and got the biggest, sharpest knife from the kitchen and removed a piece of 1½ inch thick and roughly 8 by 8 inches out of the underside of the seat's large piece of foam (basically emptied the whole butt pan) and put everything back together.

Looking at the seat in the car one can't see what I've done. When I sit down however I feel like I sink in it now whereas I used to feel like I was sitting on top of it. I can see the whole gauges and with the top up I have about a full inch of clearance from the top of my hair to the fabric sitting one click straighter than my normal postition.

My guesstimate is that I'm now sitting about two full inches lower than I used to. Not bad for zero dollars and a couple of hours of tinkering.

I opened up the back of the seat too looking to do similar as I had done a number of years ago in my '94 and remove the separate piece of foam from the lumbar area but this NB2 seat is different from a NA seat: I would've had to cut foam out so I decided to leave it alone for the time being.

Took off for a short test drive a moment ago and I'm loving the new seated position.

Glad I reviewed those vids that showed me exactly what and where to take the foam out from: it looks stock, foam is and feels flat under the fabric, is as comfy as it was and I'm better seated.

I'm having a great day and it's only two in the afternoon.

On my 2000, I put a cheap Lowe's hinge in my center console to replace the torn plastic hinge. One of those jobs where the pleasure of the finished result is far beyond the cost ($1.99) and effort (10 minutes).

Just yesterday, I managed to break that plastic hinge on my '99. Could you please post some more information about how you did the replacement, for someone who's never done any sort of inside-the-cabin work on a car? Thanks a lot in advance.

I replaced the end links and adjusted the coil overs to a more reasonable ride height. Last week when replacing the suspension I noticed my end links looked rough and the threads were rusty and such, so I ordered new for all four corners from Rock Auto.

With the new ride height it still looks good, but there’s no rubbing at all, even in lock to lock slow Speed circles.

Then I drove her 73 miles to work. When I get home in a couple days I’ll take another look at the ride height and see how much settling occurred.

It's just a silicone grease. I got a tube of it from Honda when I bought my S2000 back in '06 and I've been using it ever since on many cars. It's more like a white cream than a grease. Makes it a little easier to apply.

Lined my trunks' inner panels behind the carpet with a lightweight 1/8" adhesive foam insulation. Also replaced all the plastic clips in the trunk with new ones. After a nice drive with the top up, I'm already noticing the difference the noise insulation made. The exhaust note is easily heard over the tires now, and most of the noise in the ride comes from the front end. Pretty happy with it for relatively low cost, and with just a few ounces of weight.

I have been struggling with the problem of where to put my drink and still be able to shift hears.

I had bought one of those $7 cup holders that slide between the console and passenger sear but I hated the way it looked.

so .. I cut off the portion that is supposed to slide between the seat and replaced one of the buttons that hold down the deck carpet with a 14mm screw to attach it to the back wall between the seats.

cant fully open the storage box but I can live with that.

I dont have a link to the picture so you will have to trust me it's great

Not the most aesthetic solution, but these hinges were the solution to a couple of issues with the broken plastic hinge. The arm rest no longer squirrels around under my elbow and it now latches and unlatches without having to shift it around. I used the factory screws from the plastic hinge on the bottom and the self tapping one that came with the hinges on the top. I left them a tad loose (and only used one screw on top and bottom) to allow them to flex a little since they weren't perfectly sized for the job but they have been working flawlessly. Seems like a pretty common repair - I got the idea from this site.

Drove it in the rain. I have only had it for a week. Went to NY and got caught in torrential downpours with lots of standing water on the way home. Car still has the 14 year old OEM tires on it. It did fine. I didn't push it, but didn't have to baby it either. New tires are going on very soon, but that's because of age.

Touched up the paint on rear bumper. Next, more sanding. Soft sanding as I am almost through the paint.

I guess I’ll have the bumper professionally painted soon, for that very reason. I was rear-ended while parked and the paint cracked. Not an easy fix.

Changed my cooling hoses and radiator with a nice KOYO on my 99 - OE one. I found a radiator from Koyo that is actually made for the manual so no dump tranny cooling pipes sticking out. I thought those things were NLA from Koyo but found one for just north of a 100 on partsgeek; was able to reuse all the oem rubber hose clamps; both all Mazda hoses from PriorityMazda as a kit, only used 90degree needle-nose pliers to remove clamps and an exactoknife for the heater core ends, had to remove the oil filter and the alum. flange that supports the intake to get to 2 of the hoses; flushed 3 times and put some new blue asian vehicle coolant (no silicates or borates); cleaned the inside of my expansion tank with some sand and windex mixture - shook the XXXX out of it until the sand scrubbed all the gunk out... came out like new. Grabbed and A/C weather strip (about 1"/1" square shape) foam and inserted between frame and radiator to recreated OE look and push air through the rad...

You can buy a new plug. I used some rtv silicone sealer around the lip when I installed the new one. Loosen the two bolts on either side of the hump. Loosen and remove the bolt that holds the strap in place accords the plug. Use a flat putty knife or such to lever the edge of the plug out and it will come right out. Clean the edge where the silicon will make contact, and reinstall the new one.

BTW, that's a really nice job on the stripes. Did you do it yourself? It's pretty tricky getting offset stripes to look good on an NB, due to all of the compound curves on the nose and tail.

I seriously considered the standard dual racing stripes down the center, (I’m a bit OCD) but so far I like the rally stripe. It cost me $40 bucks and 3 1/2 hours of my time. If I were to do it again, on a nicer car, I’d pay a pro. Those look great from 20 feet, or will look fine zipping around a racetrack, but they’re definitely not perfect!

I can definitely feel the POWER! LOL...

I did do them myself. First time I’ve ever messed with vinyl. I took about 3 1/2 hours and measured everything off the centerline of the car. (Big stripe starts 6 1/4 inches from center line. Chose that distance so I could put the windshield washer nozzle between the stripes.) All went well until I hit the rear bumper with the big stripe. That took multiple attempts, lots of magic liquid (rubbing alcohol, liquid soap and water) and a heat gun!

Revved my car up in third and accidentally bounced off the rev limiter twice... heard a pop... well, there went my alternator [emoji849]

Just curious - what caused your alternator to go out, the high rpms? Any signs of it going out beforehand? I know mine started making strange bearing noises at around 60K before I found a used OEM to replace it.

The RPMs that the stock Miata engine is capable of won't damage either the 70A alternator of the NB1 or the 80A alt of the NB2.

If I were to do it again on a nicer car, I’d pay a pro! This looks fine from 20 feet and will look great on the racetrack, but it’s not a show winner!

I did my stripes farther off center than you did. The curvature of the hood made that interesting. Dealing with the front bumper and air dam wasn't too bad. Getting the stripes to look right transitioning from the top of the trunk to the back was a real PITA! I don't have an OEM spoiler, and the multi-curve bump at the back was awful. I think mine turned out "okay," but not great.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/909/26746121517_8cf064b646_k.jpg

I've since learned of "cutting tape." I would definitely use that if I was to attempt stripes in the same location again. That being said, my new stripes will be centered on the car and aren't going to extend down to the bumper or over the rear edge of the trunk lid.

That looks good! That narrow stripe on the front definitely looks like a PITA. I now know why people charge so much to install good vinyl stripes and graphics.

The window seals on the driver's side of my top were getting pulled when I closed the window, so I adjusted the tracks in as far as they would go. Things got a little worse, not better. 🤔 Is there anything else that could be causing this?

Nope, no signs that it was going out. Just hit the rev limiter; but it is my suspicion that that combined with the poly motor mounts was enough to break the pole for the alternator connector (not the plug). I have no clue why but :dunno: it happened

I was thinking about what the symptoms on the alternator were; and I noticed that the pole was loose only after seeing it compared to the new one. That's the only thing I can find that was wrong with the old alternator

But no, not the rev that broke it. As far as I can tell just a very poorly timed shift compounded by poly motor mounts :dunno: just another learning point to get better

Drove it to work today. It's an off day, I have no hearings, no client meetings, so I decided to go to the office extra casual wearing beat up jeans, well used comfortable shirt, etc. Not ten minutes from work, the alternator belt on my NB decides to tear itself apart and I was able to coast in to a franchise service company. Explained the problem to them and the wonderful service guy rolled his eyes, remarks how expensive such a repair is, and that they'll need to run my card ahead of time before they do any work.

Thats fine.

After suffering through two hours, and requesting a series of status updates as to why my car hadn't been touched, the owner, my client, walks in. We talk for a bit, and then he walks away for a moment. We continue to have a cordial conversation and discuss everything from politics to business. Not thirty minutes later my car is suddenly finished.

Amazing.

I have a key fob, but now i need to replace my door jamb sensor, which is preventing me from programming the fob.
Yes, I think it's chipped, but no it won't make non chipped key work.

I do have a set of keys coming which I hope to program myself. With only one key.

Nothing lately for mine, it stays dormant in the garage while we wait for the next little one to be born. The last thing I need is to be at an autocross when my wife goes into labor :jump:

On the other hand, I have been working on my wife's car quite a lot lately. New front lower control arms (came with bushings and ball joints), sway bar bushings front and back, sway bar end links up front, motor mounts (waiting to be installed)

I plan to install a short shifter and ALL new shifter bushings (I followed the OEM diagram and ordered every bushing associated to the shifter in some way)

The Spec-B has 143k miles on it but by the time I'm done should feel new :). I also have shocks still on order. Freaking special order (performance OEM-like shock) for this special car....I ordered beginning of February and still waiting for it to be shipped from Bilstein

I also just got back the Blackstone Labs oil results and they said it looked great. We changed the oil at 4800 miles (higher than I prefer) and they said it was comparable to a similar Subaru engine around 3800 miles. No noticeable turbo or engine wear and they said I'd be okay to stretch to 7000 miles next time if we choose to. Still planning on no more than 4000 miles especially as the engine gets up there in mileage, but good to know I have a little wiggle room if I forget

I remember those 17" wheels... you could probably make a pretty penny by selling them and get some money for smaller actual OEM wheels... the only factory 17" wheels for NBs came on the Mazdaspeeds

But also remember that your ride quality increased drastically by going to the 15" wheels. Why go back to that if you're able to source smaller wheels with less sticky shoes for commuting purposes? :dunno:

They are 22.5 in tall but the spare is only 19.5 in, which makes me think i did the right thing. Spare was also down to 45 psi which contributed to the size difference, should be at ~60

Kinda depends on distance/speed. If you're just going a couple of blocks slowly then should be no problem.

If on the other hand you need to go 2-3 miles or more in the freeway then do swap a front tire with the rear flat and put the spare on the front.

I will soon be attempting the 3rd brake light flasher mod with a non destructive technique found in the garage, but instead of a flasher relay I’m using one of those $8 flasher strobe controllers.
I found that people were way too close when stopping behind me at a light. Is it because the car is lower or smaller? And they don’t take notice? Once the flasher mod is installed I’ll try and make a subjective comparison.
I also saw the recent post of the trunk...

I did mine a few years ago. I actually got a fix it ticket for a right brake light just recently and when I went to my local PD for the sign off the LEO noticed my flasher mod on the center light. He pointed out that it wasn’t legal (California) but he thought it was a good safety feature and wasn’t about to write me up on it. He said most cops won’t hassle over it unless it constantly flashing.

Went to my first autocross today. It was an absolute blast, AND I came in 4th in my class. I also beat a Hellcat. Lmao

I walked the course with a friend of mine who is very experienced and he gave me a bunch of good pointers that I was able to use to cut my times down. There was one long u-turn I kept having understeering issues on, but I was able to keep it between the cones.

One of my friends brought his ‘02 NB and I was able to beat him. He’s running the same tires as me but he has some FM coilovers, while I’m still on stock suspension. I beat him by a few seconds. My times got better every run, and I didnt hit any cones. So over all Ill call it a success.

They usually do these events about 1.5 hours from my house, but they cant use the air strip they’ve been using anymore, so they did this one literally 1 mile from my house. I hope they move the event here for good. They had a huge turnout too. So hopefully they do.

I was worried about being able to see where I was going, because, honestly, Ive always thought the cones were kind of confusing. Yea I know they point you where to go, but they ende up lining the entire course with white lines on the edges, so it was super easy to see where I needed to go.

I did the third brake light flasher mod and have been very happy with it. I don't notice so much now, but when I first got it installed, I noticed I generally had a little more room left behind me than before.

I installed mine with the LED replacement you can get off ebay for around $50, and it has been fine. I also installed mine non-destructively. I soldered my connectors but when I ran it, I did it such that I can remove the flasher unit and just reattach the original wiring in seconds. My thought was: if a cop stops me and gives me grief about it, I can swap it back in seconds while he watches.

The unit I bought can be programmed so that it flashes the first time you hit the brakes, but won't flash if you hit the brakes within 20 seconds after that. So no constant flashing that annoys people. This is the unit I bought:

Installed my coilovers on Saturday.

Started with the front left and it took my father in law and I 3 hours to replace this one. We tried to standing on the brake disk technique and it didn't help. Eventually what helped was removing the bolts holding the lower control arms. With that off we were able to finish the install.

Once we knew this the rest of the coilovers took us just over 2 hours to do.

Sorry for the confusion.

I was wondering about AnonymousD comment. Can you share some pointers for drivers?

They were more specific to that particular course, where to brake, where to hit the apex on certain turns, where to turn in, etc.

There was one good one tip he told me that you can use on pretty much any course though. When you pull up to the starting line try to angle your car a bit so itll line you up better for whatever turn you have coming up first.

I will tell you what I learned though. If youve got an air compressor, might as well bring it. I ran 32PSI, some people were running 36 or so in their Miatas. Bring sunscreen, and reapply. I used SPF 100, then I guess I sweated it all off, and I’m burnt to a crisp. Lol.
If you have a canopy for the love of god bring it. It was 110* and we were standing in a parking lot all day. I wouldnt have been able to do that with no shade.
I put my tonneau cover on my car because I knew we had to run with the top down. Next time Ill leave it off so I can pop the top up between runs and cool down some.
When you walk the course, get your line down, and stick to it. Remember which cones are the ones you need to look for, especially the ones on the apex.
If you can, bring your own helmet. 10 loaner helmets between probably 80 ppl on a super hot day makes for some sweaty helmets. I’m definitely getting my own before my next event.

Replaced my CXRacing 2871 clone turbo with...wait for it...ANOTHER CXRacing turbo!

Why? Because, after 5 years of faithful (albeit, with "lazy" spooling) service, it was starting to leak oil into the hot side, resulting in burning some oil on cold starts - and the resultant smoky startups until the housing heated up.

Why not get a better turbo? It's all a matter of cost. I want a EFR 6758, but I just don't have $1,500 laying around. So, I'll cheap-out for now and start saving.

Looking at pics of the GV tails, all of the metal cutting is because of the depth of the light housing. Those slim LED lights/housings shouldn't require any cutting. I'm looking forward to seeing them installed. I've been planning on installing new tails in my NB. The CarbonMiata dual tails and the GV single tails are my top two choices. Yup you should be good(from my understandings well). The porter cab lights depth is what caused the interference. Someone used one of the led units from Carbon Miata with his Garage Vary nb taillights for the same reason, turned out really good.

Many a good condenser was thrown out at points change. I only ran across a genuine bad condenser twice in over 50 years of working on points systems.

But it's like the WP or RMS in our cars... as long as you got the thing apart, might was well prevent a failure.

Parked position:
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/836/42485075194_0dde81712a_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/27Jg7Gs)

I'm happy with the progress so far, but not with the result. I've made all the change I can by lengthening the motor arm, so now I'll have to shorted the wiper linkage to get any more sweep. My goal is to get as close to 180 degree coverage as possible. Of course, with both the motor and wiper arms remade, there's no need to try to preserve parts of the original tube that I've already modified. So I'll be remaking that one, too.

Unless you had one of those newer 67hp MGBs w/the single Solex that would leak and set you car on fire.Oooh, sounds like the Karmann Ghia my sister had...fuel line was cloth braided so you couldn't tell if the rubber was bad until it leaked gas over the distributor and set the engine bay on fire while you were driving...We named it Karmann Hibachi!

I remember learning to tune the pair of SU carbs on my MGB. Finally got it right and I thought I was a master. Then a guy asked me to do his AH 3000. When I opened the hood and saw three of them, I was flabbergasted.

That was 50 years ago. I don't think I've touched one since.

I think the thread has derailed.

I bow to you. I never got those SUckers to hold a tune longer than a few days at a time. I don't know how many hours I spent leaning over the engine turning one screw then the other listening to how it affected how the engine ran.

I used to be able to tune a pair of SU's in my sleep. Came from years of doing it at University motors and learning it from the master, John Twist. I even got pretty good at fully rebuilding it including sleeving the bushings which hardly anybody ke how to do back then.

While I had the console out I found the springs laying in the bottom for the cup holder doors. Quick fix was a #6 short wood screw and flat washer to hold the spring on its pivot point. Picture to follow.

I installed a gas strut trunk lift kit from Clark and Clark. I'm pretty sure it would lift just about any spoiler. I'm planning on adding the Carbonmiata Monster Spoiler soon, so I figure I'll need some extra lifting power. If you really need EXTRA lifting power, the same company makes a kit that adds a second gas strut on the right side of the trunk.

Installation was easy and took about 10 mins.

Pros:
More lifting power than the OEM torsion bar
Lifts the trunk lid all the way open when you hit the button on the remote

Cons:
Limits the trunk lid from opening as much as the oem set up

Pulled the steering wheel and connectors all out, reset the clockspring just in case I had messed that up and then put it all back together. Airbag light was out for a few drive cycles but it is back on. Time for some head scratching to see where that gets me.

The 'charger belt has been moving off by one tooth since I put her all back together. I tried a small adjustment with no success, so this morning I pulled it off completely to move the brackets around. Took a couple of tries to get it where it needed to be but finally got it done. I'll wait for a road test with some speed changes to see if it will be okay or need some more fettling.

8th July 2018, 16:37

Finished up a weekend roadtrip to see family, couple things happened. I had my first genuine close call on the highway, a sedan merged into my lane completely out of nowhere. I was doing 70 with cruise control in the left lane, slowly passing a couple cars doing 65-68ish. He was the second car from the back and must have never checked his blind spot, he just moved over like he didnt see me. Locked up the fronts and went onto the rumble strips, he continued like nothing happened. Luckily i had fixed and reinstalled my dashcam mount specifically for this trip. If we HAD come together, i would have had video to back me up.

I noticed my ac belt squeeking. It would happen when turned on, when in the higher revs, and an occasional blip at normal highway speeds. Just needs to be tightened im sure.

Also, i test drove a mazdaspeed i spotted on the way. It was pretty nice, but more expensive than anything i can reasonably afford right now. Heavier clutch, quieter, faster, and better seats than my 99, but it had been hit on the rear passengers side and had a rebuilt title. The back window was flopping around too, something wasnt right with it (not that the top on my car is a gem either, holes in all four corners of the window and gorilla taped to death). No trunk interior. However, it did drive home how crashy and rattly my car is, needs new shocks no doubt. The 6 speed was different but not something i particularly crave. 1st is really short.

I'll definitely share my thoughts!

So far I've tried their vinyl vinyl/rubber conditioner (did a great job on the NB and my wife's cars exterior door trims), tire gel (not super shiny, which I preferred), speed was (holds up surprisingly well and easy to apply), and car wash (foamy, otherwise seemed good enough)

I’m preparing my car for Road Atlanta on the 21st and 22nd. I’ll have 6 sessions per day in the novice instructed group.

I just replaced the plugs and wires, so other than that, here’s my prep list:

1) All new Calipers and fresh brake fluid/bleed. (Some may remember I had a speed bleeder fiasco before my first track day in April that led me to replace the right rear caliper) I wanted to replace them all then, but it wasn’t in the budget, nor did I have the time. When I found this set of rebuilt and powder coated factory calipers from Rock Auto, I had to do it. Besides, the original calipers are probably all 16 years old, so it’s due!

*I saw a squirrel* I couldn’t stand looking at the rusted rotors! I notice them all the time, and I recently read a couple posts and watched some YouTube videos about painting rotors, so... (Besides, I had some BBQ Grill high temp paint laying around...) I don’t know if that will last like high temp caliper paint or not, but I can start from scratch with new rotors down the road if need be.

2) All new fluids and filters. Mobil1 5w-30 and a Wix oil filter, Unicorn tears in the trans, and Lucas full synthetic 75w-90 GL5 in the diff. STP factory air filter. (Pondering a K&N, but is it really worth it?) I know all of it was new in April, except for the air filter, but I figured why not. (Although my oil still looks new on the dipstick.)

3) Check all torque specs on recent coil over and sway bar install.

4) Inspect tires

5) Inspect safety equipment

6) Run a fuel injector cleaner through the tank. (I haven’t had any issues, but why not...)

Other than that, I’ve driven it several hundred miles since the suspension upgrade and I’ve pushed it through some of the same corners I used to play on with the old suspension, and Oh MAN what a difference! I can’t wait to get this thing on the track!

Here’s some pics of today’s work!

It's much better, because race car. :D

Nah... The monowiper conversion is purely a cosmetic change. Truth be told, it is actually a decrease in performance, albeit a small one. Changing the wiper blade from 18" to 22" recovers some of the lost performance. I've also spent hours modifying the linkages in the wiper arm transmission to increase the sweep of the single arm so it will cover more of the windshield. (I'm still playing with that part.) All that being said, I religiously keep my windshield treated with RainX, so the wipers are practically vestigial any way.

I've been doing some research on adjusting my VE tables. Finally manned up and made some changes to see what I could do. I am happy to report that it was an improvement. I had bought and installed an Alpine head unit in my NB1 several weeks ago to replace the defective Mazda factory radio in the car when I bought it in April. The Alpine unit worked fine but wasn't intuitive when driving down the road, not to mention that it was nearly impossible to search through my library of songs on the iPhone from this unit. I guess I have been spoiled by the Ford SYNC system in my other car.

So, I replaced it with a Sony digital multimedia receiver with Apple CarPlay. Pretty cool, although I wish that I could use CarPlay wirelessly (that option cost a lot more). Not a deal breaker, though, and I now have navigation in the car. A bonus of connecting via USB is that the iPhone will charge when plugged in. Although I have everything hooked up, I still need to select the location for the external microphone and USB plug and run/hide these wires.

A ninety-minute drive to the in-laws today should help confirm whether the GPS will work efficiently with the phone in the glove compartment.

The external microphone wire was easily tucked under the driver's side of the center console and the microphone installed next to the parking brake. It may not look like it in the photos, but the microphone does not come into contact with the brake handle. I'll test it to see if this is a good location, as it is central in the car (hopefully good for both driver and passenger) and low (hopefully out of the wind noise).

An interesting brainstorm is to run the microphone into the ashtray (I don't smoke), so the lid can be lifted when the microphone is in use. But, because I would have to pull the radio to get to the smaller plug end of the wire to fish it through the smallest hole possible in the ashtray insert, I'll leave this experiment for another day. In the meantime, thoughts?

Foamectomy! Last night I spent 2.5 hrs taking about 1.25 inches of foam out of the drivers seat bottom. Mainly, I needed headroom, but also I wanted some support for my thighs. I removed the foam from the top of the cushion, but left the foam full thickness for the front 6" of the seat, tapered it down toward the rear.

The results are better than I could have hoped for. There's still plenty of cushion, and it feels like I gained more than the 1.25" in headroom. I even tried on a helmet with limited success. I could wear it with maybe one notch more seat recline than I'd normally want. The seat holds you in a little more in corners as well, and there is some thigh support. I might put a few washers under the front of the seat to tilt it upward slightly.

Best mod yet, and it was free :-)

Last week my water pump started leaked fatally. Couldn't get a complete water pump, /timing belt set from any of the local auto parts stores, ordered from Priority mazda, parts came in Tuesday, I have a open carport and we had thunder storms every afternoon, Friday it wasn't raining so around 5 my son and I started taking things apart, by 7 we had the radiator and fans removed along with the air filter box, valve cover, and unplugging all the electronic stuff and the harness.

We started around 8 today, didn't have the o-ring for the thermostat and had to run all around town to get a replacement. By 2 we had it done, including a lunch break, not bad for a 63 year old and a 30 something old.
