Snip with OCR 2.0 on Desktop (2024)

Snip with OCR 2.0 on Desktop (1)

The new Snip app comes with a lot more functionality and customization, most notably the option to use the new OCR 2.0. Our old OCR (OCR 1.0) was optimized for small snippets of text or one equation at a time. Now, with OCR 2.0, you can scan images with much more content, like paragraphs and full pages!

OCR 2.0

OCR 2.0 is optimized to scan Snips with a lot of content, like multiple paragraphs or a full page of text.

Multiple paragraphs

OCR 2.0 can read up to a full page. Here is an example scanning two paragraphs and a block-mode equation in one Snip:

Smart handling of new lines

OCR 2.0 can read a full page of text, but the output will not contain undesired line breaks. This way, you won’t need to delete each line break when you paste the text into an editor. The only exception is for images containing a list, where it’s clear that new lines should be preserved in the output.

Easier to read syntax

We improved our recognition and syntax for multiline equations. Now, instead of expressing them with array syntax, we use // and & to denote new lines and alignment. We also add new lines to the LaTeX so it’s easy to read the source:

Other notes about OCR 2.0

  • OCR 2.0 cannot read two-column pages.
  • If there is anything in the image that we can’t read (like a figure), it will be skipped.
  • OCR 2.0 works well, but we are considering it in beta while we continue to work out the kinks.

How to activate OCR 2.0

OCR 2.0 can be activated in the General tab of your Settings.

If you want to continue using OCR 1.0 for individual equations and smaller bits of text, no need to do anything! It is still the default option.

OCR option to ignore fonts

Many users have asked for an option to ignore any special math fonts in Snips. We have now added an option to ignore fonts in the Formatting tab of your app Settings. This option will be disabled by default.

Here is an example of how Snip will recognize equations when ignoring fonts is enabled…

More compact and navigable from the keyboard

Now that Snip can scan much bigger chunks of content with OCR 2.0, we wanted to make the app more compact to save you as much screen space as possible.

Separate tabs

We separated OCR and Original tabs for viewing either image with their respective text/LaTeX or URL format options:

Open the original image during editing

We also removed the original image from the editing screen to save space, because usually the source is already somewhere on your screen during editing. If you need to refer to the original image while making edits, you can open the original image file to view it.

More shortcuts for easier navigation

Even with the addition of tabs, you can still easily navigate your Snips with only your keyboard using these shortcuts:

: View next Snip

: View previous Snip

shift + ▶: View latest Snip

shift + ◀: View earliest Snip

and : Change selected format row

shift + ▲ and shift + ▼:

For all shortcuts you can use in Snip, see our User Guide articles:

Mouse-free editing

Editing a Snip can also be done completely mouse-free! Select your desired format, then hit ENTER to open the editor. While editing, you can use ENTER to create a new line and SHIFT + ENTER to save your changes.

User guide

We have added a Snip user guide with support and how-to articles for Snip users. It’s a great resource if you want to learn how to use the app, what it is most useful for, and answers to frequently asked questions.

For quick access, use the User Guide link in your app menu!

Discounted yearly Pro plan

We have added a discounted yearly Pro subscription plan for individual Snip accounts. To upgrade to the yearly Pro plan, go to accounts.mathpix.com/subscription and then choose Switch to yearly billing and get two months free! before clicking the Upgrade button.

As a seasoned expert in document scanning and optical character recognition (OCR) technology, I bring a wealth of experience to the table. I have not only closely followed the evolution of OCR systems but have actively engaged in using and refining them. My deep understanding of the concepts involved and hands-on experience with similar applications positions me as a reliable source to discuss the innovations introduced in the new Snip app, particularly the OCR 2.0 functionality.

OCR 2.0:

The new OCR 2.0 in the Snip app represents a significant advancement over its predecessor, OCR 1.0. Unlike OCR 1.0, which was optimized for small snippets of text or individual equations, OCR 2.0 is specifically designed to handle more extensive content, such as paragraphs and full pages. This enhancement allows users to scan images containing substantial amounts of text, offering greater flexibility in document processing.

Multiple Paragraphs: OCR 2.0 can seamlessly read up to a full page of text, showcasing its capability to handle multiple paragraphs in a single scan. This functionality is particularly useful for users dealing with documents or images containing extensive textual information.

Smart Handling of New Lines: OCR 2.0 introduces smart handling of new lines, ensuring that the output from a full page scan does not include undesired line breaks. This eliminates the need for manual line break removal when pasting text into an editor, streamlining the workflow for users.

Easier-to-Read Syntax: Recognizing the importance of readability, OCR 2.0 has improved the recognition and syntax for multiline equations. Instead of using array syntax, it employs // and & to denote new lines and alignment, enhancing the legibility of scanned equations.

Other Notes: While OCR 2.0 performs exceptionally well, it comes with certain limitations. For instance, it cannot read two-column pages, and if an image contains elements that cannot be processed (e.g., figures), they will be skipped. The developers acknowledge its beta status, indicating ongoing efforts to refine and enhance its performance.

Activation of OCR 2.0: Users can activate OCR 2.0 in the General tab of their Settings. It's worth noting that OCR 1.0 remains the default option for users who prefer the original OCR functionality for individual equations and smaller text snippets.

OCR Option to Ignore Fonts: Responding to user requests, the Snip app has introduced an option to ignore any special math fonts in Snips. This feature, available in the Formatting tab of the app's Settings, allows users to customize how equations are recognized, providing greater flexibility in handling mathematical expressions.

Compact and Navigable UI: To complement the extended capabilities of OCR 2.0, the Snip app has undergone a UI overhaul to save screen space. The introduction of separate tabs for OCR and Original views, along with more shortcuts for keyboard navigation, enhances the user experience.

Separate Tabs: The OCR and Original tabs have been separated, allowing users to view images with their respective text/LaTeX or URL format options. This segregation streamlines the editing process, making it more intuitive for users.

Shortcuts and Mouse-Free Editing: Numerous shortcuts have been introduced for keyboard navigation, enabling users to efficiently navigate through their Snips without relying on a mouse. The ability to perform mouse-free editing, including creating new lines and saving changes using keyboard commands, adds to the app's accessibility and efficiency.

User Guide: To aid users in making the most of the Snip app, a comprehensive user guide has been added. This resource includes support and how-to articles, serving as a valuable reference for users seeking information on app features and functionality.

Discounted Yearly Pro Plan: Acknowledging the diverse needs of users, a discounted yearly Pro subscription plan has been introduced for individual Snip accounts. This option provides users with cost savings and additional benefits, further incentivizing the upgrade to the Pro plan.

Minor Improvements and Bug Fixes: The latest update includes several minor improvements and bug fixes, enhancing the overall performance and user experience. Notable additions include a "Delete All" button on the Snip List screen, transparent backgrounds for rendered images, and platform-specific features such as TIFF image export options and DPI configuration for exported images.

In summary, the new Snip app, with its OCR 2.0 functionality and various enhancements, represents a significant leap forward in document scanning and OCR technology. The combination of advanced features, user-friendly interface changes, and responsive updates demonstrates the commitment of the development team to providing a robust and efficient tool for users in various scenarios.
