Amsterdam is famous for it’s special tolerance policy on soft drugs and coffee shops. First-time visitors to Amsterdam or its coffeeshops may be confused by the name “Coffee Shop”. In these alcohol-free establishments you can buy and consume weed (and of course get a drink or coffee). In a café or bar you can get coffee and other drinks, but not any cannabis.
In 2014 there were 183 coffeeshops in Amsterdam. Besides smoking weed in the coffeeshops it’s alsoallowedto smoke cannabis outside in public places, but not near children’s playgrounds and on the grounds of secondary schools.
But what about smoker friendly hotels & hostels in Amsterdam?
In most Amsterdam hotels & hostels smoking is not allowed. From July 2008, the city banned smoking of tobacco in all public indoor places. This means also all hotel lobbies and most hotel rooms are off limits to smoking. There are however a few exceptions, particularly for persons who are more interested in smoking pure weed than smoking tobacco or a combination. Smoking joints has been common in cannabis coffeeshops. Since 1 July 2008, there is a tobacco smoking ban in the Netherlands which prohibits smoking tobacco in all hotels, restaurants, and cafés. Therefore, it is now illegal to smoke joints containing tobacco in coffeeshops.
Many hotels and hostels have no-smoking rooms or are no-smoking altogether. If you want to smoke in your room be sure to book into a place that allows it.
Don't smoke in most public places, including streets, parks, and public transportation. Don't assume that everyone will appreciate the smell of marijuana.
Amsterdam's famed coffee shops are the primary locations where you can legally purchase and consume cannabis. These establishments are licensed to sell small quantities of cannabis for personal use.
Amsterdam's famous red-light district became a smoke-free zone for cannabis users on May 25. This means that cannabis consumption will not be allowed in public outdoor areas in the city centre and be limited to cannabis coffee shops.
Technically, you can smoke in coffeeshops (cafes that sell weed – and usually coffee too) but nowhere else. In reality, you'll catch that familiar sweet grassy smell emanating off the parks on sunny days, and the police will probably turn a blind eye.
The city council announced that smoking cannabis in the Red Light District will be prohibited starting from mid-May. This means that cannabis consumption will only be allowed inside cannabis coffee shops and not in public outdoor areas.
