Is it worth it to recertify a propane tank? ›

Because propane is a highly flammable liquid and gas that's stored at a high pressure the Department of Transportation requires all portable propane tanks to be recertified periodically to make sure tanks used out on the road are safe.

While new propane tanks are typically qualified for 12 years from the manufacture date in the United States, recertified tanks are usually good for only 5-7 years depending on the method of recertification.

Unlike other fuel sources, propane will not lose potency over time when stored properly. There is no expiration date on a propane tank, however, it is essential to ensure equipment is inspected regularly for safety and efficiency.

Type 1 cylinders may be suitable where limited portability is required, but Type 2 gas cylinders often provide the best balance between cost and portability.

A date without a letter indicates the next requalification must be within 12 years. The letter “S” following the date indicates the cylinder must be requalified within seven years of the marked date. The letter “E” following the date indicates that requalification is required again within five years of the marked date.

How to read propane tank recertification? ›

The easiest way to locate the requalification date on a cylinder is to find a sequence of numbers and letters that end in 'E'. Requalification may occur multiple times over the life of the cylinder, so there may be more than one requalification date stamped on the collar.

The bleeder valve or fixed level gauge is typically opened when a propane tank is filled. If it isn't closed all the way after the fill is done, propane will begin leaking. If the leak is at the valve but it isn't open, it may be from a clogged coil, which happens when a propane tank has been leaking.

Most propane grill tanks come with two numbers stamped on the handle – the water capacity (“WC”) and Tare Weight (TW – the weight of the tank when it's empty). Most grilling tanks weigh about 17 pounds when empty.

**Large horizontal (ASME) propane storage tanks need to be inspected by a Qualified Professional at a maximum interval of 5 years. They must also, at a minimum, have a legible data plate, a maximum working pressure of 250 PSI, and have the pressure relief valve replaced after 25 years.

When To Replace. Even though propane doesn't have an expiration date, the tanks unfortunately do. They last for about 30 years, but it could be longer or shorter depending on specific circ*mstances. If you notice large areas of rust or deep dents on the exterior of your tank, get them checked out.

Maintenance. Your gas cylinder is required to be re-tested and stamped every 10 years. Never use a naked flame to detect a leak. To check for gas leakage, spray soapy water on any suspect connection or hose and watch for bubbles.
