The Basics:

There are no specific laws in Minnesota that prohibit the possession or use of pepper spray as a self defense tool. All of the products that you will find in our store are legal in Minnesota.
Many of the larger cities in the country are experiencing increasing crime rates, and Minneapolis is no exception—now ranked as the 25th most dangerous city to live in, with robberies being at an all-time high. It is important that you take precautions to protect yourself from becoming a victim or a statistic.
The products that we sell are legal to possess in Minnesota, and the law says that a person can possess and use authorized pepper spray or tear gas compounds that are propelled from an aerosol container. There are restrictions for use by minors, as it is illegal for a person under the age of 16 to possess or use tear gas or pepper spray. No one under the age of 18 m ay possess or use an electronic incapacitation device (e.g., stun gun). Additionally, it is illegal for anyone to use tear gas, pepper spray, or an electronic incapacitation device on any peace officer.
Protecting yourself with a personal safety tool such as pepper spray is a good idea. It is easy to carry and easy to use, and may help to deter assailants if you are ever in a dangerous situation. It is best to avoid situations that might put your safety at risk and practice being more aware of your surroundings.
What the Official Minnesota State Law Says
From the 2016 Minnesota Statute
624.731 TEAR GAS AND TEAR GAS COMPOUNDS; ELECTRONIC INCAPACITATION DEVICES.
(b) A person may possess and use an electronic incapacitation device in the exercise of reasonable force in defense of the person or the person's property only if the electronic incapacitation device is labeled with or accompanied by clearly written instructions as to its use and the dangers involved in its use.
Subd. 3.Prohibited possession; use.
(a) No person under the age of 16 may possess or use an authorized tear gas compound except by written permission of a parent or guardian, and no person under the age of 18 may possess or use an electronic incapacitation device.
