Can you grow a cocoa plant in the US? ›

Growing cacao trees requires mimicking these conditions. In the United States, that means the tree can only be grown in USDA zones 11-13 – Hawaii, parts of southern Florida, and southern California as well as tropical Puerto Rico.

So, while it's certainly possible to grow your own cocoa plant at home, it's no easy feat! A lot goes into the process of creating your favourite chocolates, and it all begins with growing cocoa beans.
