Why are there utility flags in my yard? ›

These flags are used to identify the locations of important infrastructure like water, electric and sewer lines. They are for your safety and for the crews, so please do not move them.

Here's a key to the flags' colors: RED – Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables. YELLOW – Gas, Oil, Steam Petroleum or Gaseous Materials. ORANGE – Communication, Cable TV, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit. BLUE – Water, Irrigation and Slurry Lines.

Yellow - Gas Lines. Red - Electric Lines. Orange - Communication lines (think your internet, phone, or television) Blue – Potable Water lines.

This is known as the Carrier of Last Resort (COLR) obligation, which ensures that everyone in California has access to safe, reliable, and affordable telephone service.

The paint will fade over time; the people responsible for the planned project should remove the flags when they are no longer needed. That could be as long as 14 weeks. General Flag Color Meanings

If you see flags and paint in your yard, please do not remove them. There is work being performed on a utility line without you being aware. These markings are very important and needed by the contractors to know what is underground.

A white utility flag means pre-marking of the outer limits of the proposed excavation or marking the centerline and width of proposed lineal installations of buried facilities.(proposed excavation limits or route)

Leave the flags in place until your underground work is complete. You must begin digging within 14 days of the start date listed on the ticket. Make sure children and neighbors know not to remove the flags until the work is done.

Work being performed by contractors is almost always in the right-of-way, or within an existing utility easem*nt. Residents shouldn't mow over, or remove the flags, especially if they value their water, sewer, gas, internet, phone, or other services.
