When double red flags are flying on the beaches in Bay County, swimmers should stay out of the water.
The Bay County Sheriff's Office sent out a reminder Thursday morning about the Bay County flag system.
Thursday double red flags were flying along the beaches, meaning the waters of the Gulf of Mexico are closed to swimmers due to dangerous conditions. Deputies say if you're caught swimming during double red flags, you could be arrested.
Here's what each flag flying means:
-Purple flags indicate the presence of dangerous marine life, such as jellyfish.
-Green flags indicate swimming conditions are at a low hazard level with calm surf and currents.
-Yellow flags indicate medium hazard swimming conditions with moderate surf and currents.
-Single red flags posted signal that conditions are at high hazard level with high surf and strong currents.
Deputies say you can see flag poles along the beach. Each morning the flags are changed to reflect the conditions of the day.
