so, is it true that you can't bring even unused perephenalia? what if i wanted to bring back a grinder or something?
also, are lighters okay on either flight? (it's been a couple of years since i've flown overseas)

Are paraphernalia legal in your state? If they are you should be allowed to import them. Check with US customs.
For lighters: check with your carrier.

well they sell tobacco perephernalia in head shops here in florida. pipes, grinders, papers, etc.
years ago any of these new/unused were allowed. lately i've heard that you can't pack or carry them through customs. one person even said you can't ship them either.

Lighters are not allowed in carryon or checked bags.
"Safety matches" in limited quantity may be allowed in carryon but no matches allowed in checked bags.
Best to check the rules on your airline's website.
If you want to bring back a very small item, ie. grinder, the risk lies in whether you would be subjected to a physical search. Hopefully, at worst, the item would be confiscated. Under no circ*mstances carry back anything with any residue on it, as the dogs can pick up on that.
Is this kind of souvenir that important, and something you cannot obtain at home?

thanks for your input, travely.
the grinder's pretty important. i've been looking for a certain hand-carved type of yo-yo-sized grinder since i lost mine years ago.
i'm probably going to ship a package of shopping back anyway.

Last year I brought back (4) credit card pipes, (3) Glass pipes, (1) grinder like you've described and lotsa papers and screens.
Granted, I'm 44 and travel dressed nicer than most, but I wasn't stopped at all flying into O'hare.
I'd say bring any unused you want back.

Always best to double check all pockets before returning home. Its amazing what can lurk forgotten in a pair of jeans or at the bottom of a bag. Dogs will definately pick up the scent if you have been active on holiday:)

Just thought I would add, make sure u use one of the laundemats in the Dam. After spending 8 days and a bag of dirty laundy in my bag, been to numerous coffeeshps, the dogs were sniffing all over me on the return trip.

When I returned to New Jersey no one even looked at us. They must have all been tired from the new years celebration too. There were no dogs visible, and no one looked in my bag. Only one person actually looked at me at all and that was the one stamping my passport! However, when entering amsterdam, we were stopped at the doors to the outside and asked if we had any relatives in the netherlands.
