There is a problem with doing this. Your truck is set up for the TBI set-up, not a Vortec set-up. The Vortec set-up is controlled by a OBDII computer and the computer in your truck is a OBD1. Nothing will hook up, and the fuel system is wrong in your truck for the Vortec set-up. If you wanted the Vortec heads on your engine then you would have to buy a new intake manifold to be able to get the TBI set-up onto the heads. I did this, check out my garage on this sight, 400 hp. roller rocker, port and polished Vortec engine, '97 Vortec engine in my '95 Silverado.

What I was reading was implying that I can swap the heads and pick up a intake manifold and a throttle body spacer and run it on my tbi 350

But you would need to buy a TBI intake manifold to bolt up to the Vortec heads. You can't by a spacer for the Vortec intake manifold.

What I was reading was saying it requires a vortec intake manifold to fit the heads? Unless a specific tbi aftermarket fits the motor with the vortec heads? Also if I do this and get heads from the junkyard that are good and not cracked etc should I get them cut? Or would I be okay and upgrade the valve train ?

Thats what I said. From Jegs, intake p/n 809-12496821. But what you want to do here...all depends on the condition of your block, how many miles are on it? On Chevy's I would not do anything with a block that would have over 50,000 miles on it. It is a crap shoot, no guarantees. Reconditioning the heads raises the compression, and the chance of turning the engine into a oil burner. It would pull the oil up past the rings. Vortec heads are a high flow head anyway. Here is a link to the TBI Vortec intake manifold... http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet-Performance/809/12496821/10002/-1

Dhr23, no on the intake fit, Vortec heads have a different bolt pattern, the Vortec intake has 8 bolts to hold it down where as from 1995 on back take 12 bolts to hold down the intake manifold on GM 350 or 5.7 engines.

I'm pretty sure I can do this but would like professional input. I have a 97 k3500 and am first owner. I love this truck whick is my reason for the project. It has a 7.4l vortec but at 180k it's engine is feeling tired. It's a truck and has been used as such. I have a 91 7.4l tbi sitting in the barn with 64k but it came out of a class a rv so those miles are like dog years. It was a very strong engine when I scrapped the chassis and still had fantastic compression. The compression in the 97 is also very good. I'm thinking of rebuilding the bottom end of the tbi engine primarily to reduce swap time because I use this truck a good deal. I'm thinking the head's will be a direct swap which of course the intake would be as well. The truck is a New Mexico truck and chassis, body and interior are in great shape and well maintained. The cost of just replacing with a new truck is not practical in my opinion. I do my own work for the most part so any input or recommendations would be appreciated.

Forgot you also would need the distributor timing cover the tone ring behind the balancer all the sensors are different it's alot of work but really not that bad would be easier to get a complete engine maybe a junker wreck with a good engine and take everything you need probably save some money

Chevrolet C/K 1500 Questions - Tbi350 vortec heads (2024)

FAQs

Can you put Vortec heads on a TBI 350? ›

Nothing will hook up, and the fuel system is wrong in your truck for the Vortec set-up. If you wanted the Vortec heads on your engine then you would have to buy a new intake manifold to be able to get the TBI set-up onto the heads.

What is the difference between the 5.7 TBI and the 5.7 Vortec? ›

TBI is a little simpler and probably more reliable. The vortec engines were prone to intake manifold gasket leaks where coolant could enter the engine oil.

Will TBI exhaust manifolds fit Vortec heads? ›

They used an external pipe from the exhaust manifold to the intake. The Vortec valve cover mounting surface is in the same place as the TBI engine. The exhaust ports and mounting flanges are in the same place. The Vortec will fit in the same place and you can use the exhaust you currently have.

Can you put Vortec heads on a non Vortec block? ›

Vortec heads are compatible with earlier-generation blocks, but there are a couple of differences. The Vortec heads use center-bolt valve covers, and the bolt pattern and angle of the intake manifold surface are different. Other than that, everything else should work fine.

Why are Vortec heads better? ›

The Vortec heads offer a wealth of power potential for their extremely low price. In several tests of these heads, we've been able to make 400 hp and excellent torque with a relatively mild camshaft.

How do you tell if my 350 is a Vortec? ›

One easy way to identify the 5.7L Vortec engine is to examine the cylinder heads. The GM Industrial Vortec cylinder head was made by installing LT1 Corvette ports into an iron casting. The intake manifold bolts on with an 8-bolt pattern, unlike most other 5.7 GM heads that bolt on with a 12-bolt pattern.

What CC are 350 TBI heads? ›

The '87-'95 cast-iron 350 heads returned to 64-66cc combustion chambers.

How much horsepower will TBI support? ›

Stock TBI unit can make about 330 HP at its best with normal compression and cam design. Design the engine as a 2bbl restrictor plate setup and could probably crest 400 with the stock size TBI and raised fuel pressure or larger injectors.

How much horsepower does a stock 350 TBI have? ›

These vehicles featured a 350 ci, 5.7 Small Block Chevy with TBI (throttle body injected) EFI system, and swirl port heads. Producing up to 210 hp in factory spec, this engine can also be retrofitted into an older car with a performance carburetor to produce up to 250 hp. Torque: 300 ft. -lbs.

What does TBI 350 mean? ›

Throttle Body Injection (TBI)

TBI, which is basically one step up from a carburetor, is found on older vehicles. As was mentioned, the setup uses one or two throttle body-mounted injectors to spray fuel into the intake manifold.

How reliable is a TBI 350? ›

tbi is about as reliable as one would expect a simple system with a few sensors and 2 injectors can be. i've never actually had a coolant temp sensor fail but i believe the ignition module has failed in my 350 tbi roadmonster.

How much horsepower does Vortec heads add? ›

A more aggressive cam is used on this combo. Another notable difference is that the Vortecs have smaller combustion chambers, which up the compression about 1.5 points. These upgrades produce 375 HP and 408 ft-lbs of torque.

Is TBI and Vortec the same? ›

Yes tbi is simple and usually easy to fix but the vortec is newer technology. Roller cam, mpfi and best flowing gm heads- big plus for pulling power.

What is the difference between SBC and Vortec heads? ›

The L31 Vortec heads have larger ports than the older Gen I cast steel heads, so they outflow the older heads. The Vortec heads are a little bit lighter than the older heads and have a “kidney” or “heart” shaped combustion chamber that is more efficient than the double hump chamber.

Is a Vortec block the same as a TBI block? ›

With small blocks, a TBI enigine has a flat tappet cam and a Vortec uses a hydraulic roller. The bosses might be in the TBI block for the roller lifter retainers, but the machining is not done. Some of them are machined for a factory roller cam.

How much HP can a stock TBI handle? ›

Stock small-block throttle bodies only flow around 500 cfm (compared with a stock Q-jet that flows 750 cfm). It's possible to make around 275 hp with a stock TBI unit, so rather than go nuts on a heavily modified TBI, I'd suggest you start by making sure the existing TBI unit and injectors are in good shape.

Do Vortec heads use different rocker arms? ›

Starting from the top and working our way down, the Vortec heads require a different intake manifold, gaskets, and bolts; different valve covers, gaskets, and bolts, unless you already had center-bolt valve covers (then yours will work); new rocker arms, unless you were already using the self-aligning style arms; and ...
