Does Byrna count as a firearm? ›

It is an incredibly powerful and non-lethal self-defense weapon. The Byrna SD is not classified as a firearm therefore does not require a permit or background check to own. Must be 18 or older to purchase.

When purchasing a Byrna, there are no background checks, licenses or required permits to carry one. The Byrna is legal in all 50 states, which makes it ideal for people traveling across state lines because they won't have to worry about whether or not it is legal to carry the Byrna.

This allows your Byrna to sit for days, weeks, months and still be ready to fire on the first pull of the trigger. Once pierced, the CO2 will start to leak out, fully discharging over the next 24 to 48 hours leaving the launcher inoperable.

However, the Byrna HD is not a firearm, and is more akin to a BB, airsoft, or paintball gun, albeit more powerful. Those such devices are legal for felons to possess in California, and Federally.

While the CO2 cartridge will be enough to power 20+ rounds, once the CO2 is pierced, even if it is not fully exhausted, it should be replaced by an unused cartridge before the launcher is stored.

CALIFORNIA RESTRICTIONS

State law in California only allows us to ship the TCR-Tactical Compact Rifle, Mission 4 rifle, and Byrna KINETIC launchers and kits. They only contain Kinetic Solid and Eco Kinetic projectiles. They do not contain the chemical rounds. We cant ship ANY products to San Francisco.

Each cartridge (new) will be good for 15-20 rounds (4 mags in a 5 round magazine) at full speed. Punctured cartridges within the Byrna HD will leak over time. It is recommended to swap out punctured CO₂ cartridges and leave an un-punctured cartridge inside the Byrna HD to avoid any compressed air loss.

The Byrna HD is basically a paintball gun where the “paintballs” are filled with pepper spray. Police experience with pepper sprays and tear gas has been mixed. Most times it has some effect but understand that the attacker is not physically incapacitated and can still attack.

The Byrna Kinetic projectiles are made of solid polymer which can be used for both training and self-defense. It is powerful enough to break glass on impact. The Byrna SD launcher comes with an upgraded ergonomic honeycomb grip for better control of the launcher in all conditions, wet or dry.

The Byrna SD is a smaller, lighter version of the Byrna HD that is designed for easy concealment and portability. The Byrna HD, on the other hand, is a larger, heavier-duty device that is designed for more robust self-defense.

One 4 fl. oz. (118 ml) container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. Self-defense sprays containing more than 2 percent by mass of tear gas (CS or CN) are prohibited in checked baggage.

The Byrna Launcher, for lack of a better explaintion, a pepperball pistol. It is legal to open carry pepper spray in florida for self defense purposes. The law says the container but be compact in size an hold no more then 2 oz. The Byrna launcher is about the size of a Glock.

Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage. Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm.
