How to measure shoulder bolt dimensions? ›

Size is the shoulder diameter and length is the length of the shoulder—measure length from under the head to the end of the shoulder. An additional dimension is thread size, which is always smaller in diameter than the shoulder, and ranges from 10-24 to 5/8-11 for the common sizes.

Standard commercial-grade shoulder screws come in diameters from ¼ to 2 in. and 6 to 24 mm. Precision-grade shoulder screws range from 3/32 to ½ in.

As seen in the accompanying diagram, shoulder bolts have three main sections: the head, the shoulder, and the thread. You specify a shoulder bolt by its shoulder diameter and shoulder length. For example, a ⅜ × 2 shoulder bolt has a shoulder diameter of ⅜ in.

The shoulder diameter can measure between 3/32” to ½”, the thread class is 2A, and the shoulder tolerance can range between +0.000/-0.001 to -0.0005 to -0.0015. The shoulder length of a precision shoulder screw also has a tighter tolerance at -0.000 to +0.002.

Still, based on biacromial measurements taken in years passed and trends observed by researchers, it's probably safe to say that in the United States average shoulder width is at least 16 inches (41 cm) for men and 14 inches (36 cm) for women.

What is the difference between a shank and a shoulder bolt? ›

The shank has threads that are held in place by a cylindrical shaft that ensures stability when the threads are inserted into a hole. They are used in applications where there are vibrations or heavy loads. Since shoulder bolts have a low profile, they can be used in tight spaces where traditional bolts do not fit.

The ISO 898-1, ISO 3506-1 and ASTM F606 standards describe tests on threaded fasteners (bolts, screws and studs) including steel screws and their mechanical and physical properties such as tensile strength, offset yield (minimum stress), elongation after fracture and hardness.

In terms of industry standards, stud bolts are typically available in lengths ranging from 1 inch to 72 inches or more, depending on the diameter and thread pitch. However, custom lengths can be manufactured to meet the specific requirements of a project.

Do not measure the head of the bolt, measure the threaded part, outside of the threads. If your bolt is metric, then the diameter is stated using the letter "M". For example, if your bolt has a diameter of 4mm then it is called an 'M4 bolt' if your bolt is imperial then it will be measured in inches.
