Legally, you can start riding a motorcycle on a public road at the age of 16. You would need at least a learner’s licence and at 16 you can get a learner’s for a motorcycle with engine size up to 125cc. You can also get a licence for a motorcycle up to 125cc at age 16: the code A1 licence.

At age 18, you can get a learner’s for a motorcycle with an engine larger than 125cc. Unlike with a car licence, you cannot get a learner’s licence for the larger motorcycle (code A licence) at the age of 17. You have to be 18.
