Talk about first impressions: The color of your front door can drastically affect not only the feel of your home but also its value. While painting a front door may seem like an easy update for a prospective home buyer to make, certain front door colors—like slate blue and black—can actually make your home sell for more.

According to new research by Zillow, homes with a black front door could sell for an estimated $6,449 more than similar homes with other front door colors. For a slate blue front door, buyers might pay an average of $1,537 more. Another top option? Olive green, which potential buyers might pay an extra $969 more.

“When going through a stressful process that brings half of all buyers to tears, visual cues like color can have an outsize impact on decision making,” Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trends expert, noted in a press release.

Naturally, some buyers found certain colors off-putting and said they’d even pay less for them—including a pale pink front door, which they described as “kind of shabby looking” and would pay an average of $6,516 less than expected. The color that ultimately came in last, though, was cement gray.

So whether you plan to sell your home in the near or distant future, remember that the right fresh coat of paint could easily increase its resale value. And if you need tips on how to paint a front door, should you not have a desired color, we have you covered with a step-by-step guide and video on how to get it done.
